Principals, directors, stockholders and distinguished guests joined the agency staff in celebrating Michaelmar Philippines’ 20th anniversary on 9 February 2018 at the Solaire Resort and Casino in Parañaque. The black-and-white formal occasion was earmarked for the appreciation of loyalty, dedication, and commitment from the people who have contributed to Michaelmar’s success for the past two decades.
The lavish event began with a solemn thanksgiving mass presided over by the Archbishop of Caceres, Rolando Tirona, O.C.D., while the evening’s programme were hosted by celebrities Janeena Chan, and Billy Crawford who also serenaded the party with hit pop songs throughout the evening. The sumptuous buffet featured choice Mediterranean cuisine.
As a manning agency whose vision focuses on exceeding customer expectations and achieving local and international recognition through excellence, Michaelmar Phils. has made it their mission to be the preferred and most valued company of choice for shipowners and third party ship managers alike. Bulk carriers, oil/product tankers, and oil/chemical tankers make up the bulk of its European-flagged fleet.
In her welcome speech, President Maria Mercedes Ravanopoulos recalled how she and her husband Capt. Pericles Ravanopoulos (who also sits on the company board of directors) began operations in a small office with Stelmar Tankers as their first client. Back then, they only had one other staff, but there was every reason to be hopeful for the future. “I can still remember 1997, back when Pericles and I were just starting the company. There were challenges and doubts along the way but we overcome these with a simple goal of shining a light to talented Filipinos all around the world. Prior to 1997, we had spent three years working in Narcan where I personally was able to learn the ins and outs of crewing, giving me the necessary knowledge to start on our own,” she reminisced.
“Little did we know, 20 years after, our small company would grow to serve hundreds, if not thousands of personalities, clients, seafarers, stakeholders, and everything in between. And I am proud to share that through the years of servicing ship owners and managers worldwide, the significant reputation we have has set us apart from the competition, even garnering highest local recognitions one can get,” the president continued.
A family-run business, the company unsurprisingly embodies core values as a cornerstone for success. And Capt. Ravanopoulos intends to keep it that way: “We are only getting started. Moving forward, I would like each and every one of us to maintain and enhance the good culture and constructive participation we have relied on for years. Rest assured that Michaelmar Philippines will continue to keep our doors and ears open like what a family should be.”
Consistent with Michaelmar Phils.’s conviction that people are the company’s most important assets, the highlight of the evening was the conferring of loyalty awards for the hardworking men and women who have been with the agency for five years and longer. Aside from a commemorative plaque, each loyalty awardee was also presented with a gift as a token of appreciation. Those who have been with the company for 10 years and longer were gifted with a trip to China to enjoy the winter snow along with their chosen companion.
The night had a noticeably relaxed vibe amidst friends and well-wishers within the maritime scene. Raffle draws for gadgets and other electronics like LED TVs and refrigerators were held at very frequent intervals. There were also two sets of winners for Stars of the Night, chosen from the best dressed attendees: a male and female awardee was cherrypicked amongst the staff, as well as from the guests.
Sotirula Patricia Ravanapoulos, Michaelmar Manager for Human Resources, shares that they made an effort to make it a real thanksgiving to those who have been part of the agency’s day to day: “We invited everyone in the industry we work with: clinics, banks, training centers, poea, embassies, suppliers, etc.”
Michaelmar Director Spyros Ravanopoulos, alongside his parents Pericles and Maria Mercedes, and sister Sotirula Patricia onstage, had a very simple yet heartfelt speech to end the evening: “This company is literally where I have grown up. For the past twenty years, this is where our family has been. And this is where we still intend to be for the next twenty years more.”
