Six crews of Demeter, a German-owned vessel, were reported to have been abducted off Nigeria wherein four of those are Filipinos, one Ukrainian and one Hungarian.

According to the Sea Guardian consultancy, the pirates have abducted the crews, including (the) master, chief officer, second officer, second engineer, bosun and cook.

The Demeter is a Liberia-flagged vessel owned by German shipping firm the Peter Doehle Group.

“The vessel was attacked by pirates on early Saturday morning when it was approaching one of the ports of Nigeria,” said a spokesman for Peter Doehle Schiffahrts KG.

“The top priority is to try and establish contact with the kidnappers and try to have a quick and safe release of our seafarers,” he stated.

Meanwhile, reports said that the remaining 12 seafarers of the Demeter are safe and unhurt and the vessel has proceeded to safe water.

The waters off Nigeria are long been known to be at high risk for piracy and kidnapping for ransom is a common problem on some parts of it.
